I think his podcasts are hilarious and get me through my long drives from Hollywood back to the MoVal area. Red State to me is something we have never seen before from Kevin like you said, and I personally enjoyed what he did and the actors he got to play in the film. You mention how some characters are in there but not fleshed out and the only reason you care about the character is because of the actor. He said during his Q&A at the New Bev that is why he cast those people. He said when you see that actor show up you think "oh he is going to save the day" Then BANG he is dead, so it is that shock factor. The original ending was supposed to be with the 2nd coming of Christ and the horns blow and the Angels of Death comes and runs the entire church through with swords sending them to tell etc. but he said he wanted the ending to be more plausible instead of out of the blue. Plus, the ending made for comedy and etc. So ya I do love this movie but I respect what you said as usual. Like I always say, agree or disagree everyone has their own opinion and that is what makes this site fun.Kristianhttp://www.assly.tvnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-31568511815800313072011-10-28T16:08:46.098-07:002011-10-28T16:08:46.098-07:00I'd bet that in the past, Klein would simply d...I'd bet that in the past, Klein would simply do as Smith asked, whereas now Smith was asking Klein what he would do and then let him do it.Garthnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-85436592467576405872011-10-28T16:06:22.169-07:002011-10-28T16:06:22.169-07:00It's such an odd movie, because it is undeniab...It's such an odd movie, because it is undeniably the best-looking and best-shot movie (though I'll disagree about best-directed since I heard him on Opie and Anthony basically saying that his smartest move was to hire very good actors and a very good crew and then step out of the way and let them do their thing, ie not direct them at all, basically), but it has to be one of his worst, messiest scripts. I hadn't thought about the idea that it might have had to be rewritten due to budget (and had no idea that the ending was changed) because to me the main problem is that it seems like such a first draft. I would've guessed that he wrote the script and when he couldn't get financing he just tossed the first draft into a drawer until he started sending it out to actors.Garthnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-54953665942305570942011-10-28T12:14:49.701-07:002011-10-28T12:14:49.701-07:00True, but Dave Klein has shot the majority of Smit...True, but Dave Klein has shot the majority of Smith's films, so if he's always been doing the majority of the work while Smith just sat there, why did the others look so bland?BChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06480847497966171794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-53375719179821495112011-10-28T12:05:49.200-07:002011-10-28T12:05:49.200-07:00Goes to show how much a great DP can add to a movi...Goes to show how much a great DP can add to a movie. I don't give Smith much credit for the movie looking good at all. I've been on sets where the DP would say something basic like "we could do a slight dolly to open the scene" and the director is ecstatic because he never even thought of that. I'd put my money on Smith being the same.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-40705504697491150942011-10-28T07:04:42.763-07:002011-10-28T07:04:42.763-07:00Great review. When I heard Smith was going to make this movie I had a sense he was going to end it the same way *spoiler* Frailty ended. <br /><br />As it is, the movie doesn't really gel and I'm really disappointed this wasn't a true horror movie.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-41669598795047436952011-10-28T06:42:56.801-07:002011-10-28T06:42:56.801-07:00Movie = crap. Not a horror. A bit of the sermon, dude in the cage, dude on the cross had a bit of a Hostel/Saw feel I guess, but mostly it was a muddled action/police procedural. And, yep, while it looked better and was more visually interesting than any Smith movie ever, it was still way talky. Just mouthfuls of dialogue. Of course a great cast pulled it off without seeming wooden. But, jesus, dude, some subtext goes a long way. For a little while I thought the ending was going to take a turn into some batshit territory. But, nope, more talking. Lots and lots of talking. Everything spelled out. All of his points very overtly stated.<br /><br />Of course, I agree with all of his points. And I was really hoping to like this movie. It's really too bad that after all the years of hearing about this it turned out so mediocre.C.
