I really loved the first 30 minutes or so of this one, but beyond a few "Ah-ha!" moments, they really front-loaded the movie with all the interesting bits. And calling the movie TIMECRIMES is the biggest spoiler of all! The movie really only has two big surprises, and one of them is given away in the title (and the other was pretty obvious, although the idea is fun and well-done). Overall, this is a good film, but I might have been a victim of the festival hype, as this didn't really meet my expectations. The AintItCool pull-quote is "It's absolutely fantastic. A perfect film," which I just can't see.

Side note: Cultures that routinely treat women the way women are treated in this movie are just completely foreign to me. The way "Hector" treats his wife and the young girl he sees on the road -- and the fact that they obey his every word -- is bizarre. I know there is some armed intimidation involved with the Bike Girl scenes, but there are long stretches where she has plenty of time to get away and is just too mousy to do it. I just can't see modern women acting this way and I can't seen a North American remake (please don't waste your time, Mr. Cronenberg!) being written this same way.Marc P.https://www.blogger.com/profile/18117743249926488068noreply@blogger.com
