I just didn't feel like it was fair to the movie as a whole to dismiss it because you knew he was crazy. I knew Christian Bale was crazy in The Machinist but that didn't sap one ounce of power out of that movie. I loved the mood, the atmosphere of Shutter Island. It was Val Lewton or Shock Corridor turned up to 100. Scorsese was having a blast just reveling in pure genre. It was fun trying to remember what was real and what wasn't too. I may have known the ending, but it had been long enough that the little details escaped me. For example, I totally forgot if Mark Ruffolo's character was real or not. It totally enhanced the paranoia, and man does DiCaprio give it everything he's got when he has to face what actually happened. What a great actor.Dustin Hiserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06374138064110507300noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-12103011713481660982010-09-10T14:21:43.264-07:002010-09-10T14:21:43.264-07:00I'm late. I will say that it was so obvious that the Marshal was insanne that I thought the big twist at the end would be a double twist where you discover that he was in fact sane. So, the surprise was that there was no surprise. I guess I expected something like The Sixth Sense. Instead, I was pretty happy with how it played out. If you're not looking for a disorienting twist, this film is perfect.Miskatonichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10458189434988263478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-5499166074836937682010-07-28T16:53:35.297-07:002010-07-28T16:53:35.297-07:00I just saw this today on VOD. It kind of heightened the suspense, because I was always trying to decide which parts, if any, of HIS backstory were true. I also really appreciated the vibrant and sensationally weird dream sequences. I feel like too often in recent horror, the sensational WTF imagery is given less favor than the cold monochromatic (?) style of stuff like "The Collector".Mattnoreply@blogger.com
