I promised myself (we'll see if I manage to keep the promise) that I would not read ahead in the book. I will allow myself to watch more than 1 movie in a day, but am only allowed to read a review if I'm about to put the time in to watch.

Anyway, I've just watched this movie. So much to unpack from it. Right from the start, the city girl is depicted as uncaring and the opposite of empathetic. I think I called her heartless under my breath, among other things. Then, we meet her childhood friend, who is basically her polar opposite, but has every reason to be mean and unyielding. Yet, if she exhibits even the hint of power or self respect, it is stamped out by her husband and his vile family. No wonder the men on that island are so Mary women are at each other's throats, always in competition for men who act like jailers. It was right about this time a few other epithets were mumbled under my breath, along with wishes for their slow painful deaths... I was all in at this point, wanting that pay off. But the movie didn't give it to me. Only more reasons to want revenge.

Part of me wants to dive into the way this story takes on feminism, and abuse, and some other things. But... This is your review page, not mine. And really, I'm just here for horror movies.

Though, this movie had me crying like a baby at some parts. I wasn't feeling all the feels, but it tugged on a few strings.

I've been long winded enough... I don't want to spoil it for anyone who has yet to see it. But OMGoodness! I Love the recommendation. I'm enjoying your book. Thanks so much!Victoriahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02776891283967563886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-19542439866916151862013-01-09T07:17:23.444-08:002013-01-09T07:17:23.444-08:00Please watch the film a bit more carefully before ...Please watch the film a bit more carefully before you review. City girl refused to identify ANOTHER woman's attackers, refused to stand by her abused friend, refused to tell what she knew, refused to get involved, ran away and left her friend to get attacked when they were kids, was attracted to her friend when kids and kissed her and then DENIED it. A HUGE part of the movie was about lateral agression, ie women treating other women badly because of fear, self disgust and the identification with the opressor, as well as plain ol' dick whipped toadying. It sounds like a very gripping movie, though, I might have to watch it.

Thanks again for the prompt reply!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-75172093210119071612010-09-04T18:26:52.954-07:002010-09-04T18:26:52.954-07:00SPOILERS!!!
There's no rape, the child abuse ...SPOILERS!!!

There's no rape, the child abuse is only implied, and Bok-nam went after the friend because she didn't speak up for her to the police when she had the chance.BChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06480847497966171794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5110147752122772426.post-49596664914295981072010-09-04T18:05:57.949-07:002010-09-04T18:05:57.949-07:00I just have to say that I love reading your review...I just have to say that I love reading your reviews, even though I don't really comment (I read them on google reader). But this movie sounds utterly creepy, and I rather desperately want to know why Bok-nam tried to kill her friend, and if her daughter was ok at the end. (I've been trying to find spoilers online to no avail.) I don't watch tragic movies if they have child abuse or rape as a plot point, so it would impact my decision to watch it.

I'm glad you had fun at Frightfest! It sounded like a lot of awesome movies.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
